Can Backed-Up Gutters Cause A Roof Leak?

Katelyn Lewis • October 23, 2024

Short answer: Yes, with or without a baseball (like this homeowner’s). Here’s why.

When gutters are clogged with leaves, debris, or ice, they can't effectively channel water away from your roof. Water then can overflow and pool around the edges of the roof, which can seep into the fascia, soffits, and under the shingles. If continuously exposed to water or moisture, your roof’s underlayment and decking may be damaged, which will allow more water to make its way into your home.

Plus, constant water exposure from backed-up gutters can increase moisture levels in your attic space, which mold and mildew LOVE. Yikes.

Overflowing gutters can also cause water to run down the exterior walls, leading to water getting in behind the siding or through any small cracks or gaps. Over time, this can result in water damage to exterior walls, insulation, and the interior of your home.

So, please: Clean your gutters at least twice a year. Installing gutter guards, checking for proper drainage, and inspecting for visible signs of damage are additional steps you can take to keep your gutters functioning properly. And no, we won’t clean your gutters.
