What's Drip Edge & Why Does Your Roof Need It?
Does your roof need drip edge?
Drip edge is the bent piece of aluminum installed at the eaves of a roof and sometimes at the rakes. The major benefit of drip edge is that it provides a path for water to flow directly from the roof and into the gutters. This helps prevent splashing from the gutters onto the fascia and the edges of the roof deck. When properly installed, drip edge also helps prevent squirrels and other rodents from entering your attic space.
The 2021 Virginia Construction Code – the latest edition – says drip edge
must be installed at eaves and rake edges of shingle roofs. For other roof types (metal, flat, cedar), this requirement may depend on the manufacturer.
It’s important to make sure your roofing contractor has included drip edge installation in their roof replacement estimate, to keep your home well protected and up-to-code.
