RETEX Volunteer Day with Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center – January 2026
On Friday, January 23, five members of the RETEX team headed to the Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center in Chester, VA, to help sort and organize foodstuffs for a pickup that afternoon ahead of the winter storm.
The Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center was established in 2010 as “a passionate, faith-based nonprofit with a vision to nourish and strengthen our community,” according to its website.
They do so by providing 600+ families with fresh groceries – meats, fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy products, and pantry items – throughout the month, filling the gaps in aid programs offered through the county and other organizations. This food distribution is only part of the amazing work they’re doing through their outreach efforts to empower “individuals and families to overcome the root causes of food insecurity.”

It was especially pertinent that our volunteer day happened when it did, as the outreach center had to change its pickup day to that Friday afternoon in order to avoid the anticipated wintry mix in the forecast for Saturday.
In just over 2 hours, RETEX’s Andy Connor, Chris Spahr, and Katelyn Lewis were able to sift, organize, and package various fruits and vegetables into the stack of the yellow bins you see next to us. RETEX’s Mark Erickson helped with sorting through expired dairy products, and RETEX’s Mark Scarpino was tasked with various lifting, organizing, and sorting jobs to keep us in the produce section operating steadily.
We love being a part of the Greater Richmond community, and we really enjoyed our volunteer day with the Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center. We look forward to returning and pitching in again soon!
