Does My Chimney Need Repointing?

Does my chimney need repointing?

Glad you asked!

Chimney repointing fixes the mortar seals between the bricks of your chimney, as you can see on this Richmond homeowner’s chimney courtesy of our Repair Team Bravo.

Even the best mortar seals last about 25-30 years. If left unattended, you may end up with a leaky chimney and, worst-case scenario, a structural collapse. On the other hand, repointing your chimney will give you at least 25 years of peace of mind.

Your chimney may be due for some TLC (a.k.a., repointing) if:

  • You notice cracks, gaps, or crumbling mortar joints between the chimney’s bricks or stones
  • You discover water leaks or staining on the interior walls or ceilings near the chimney
  • You spot loose bricks or stones in the chimney structure
  • The mortar appears significantly worn or recessed
  • You notice efflorescence, a white, powdery substance that forms on the surface of masonry when water evaporates and leaves behind salt deposits. If you notice efflorescence on the chimney surface, it could indicate moisture issues related to deteriorated mortar joints.
  • Your chimney is leaning or tilting (most-severe)

If you’re a homeowner in the Richmond area and you’ve noticed water spots near your fireplace, Retex is the team to call for both roof and chimney assessments. Reach us at 804-258-6300 to schedule a free estimate today.
