Habitat Home Dedication: Welcome Home, Mitchells!

Katelyn Lewis • June 25, 2024

Congratulations to The mitchells on their new home!

The hardworking mother of three, Melissa Mitchell balanced working full-time as an insurance service rep while simultaneously earning her associate’s degree.  She applied for and was accepted into Habitat for Humanity’s Affordable Homeownership Program, and with the program’s help she is purchasing this beautiful, new-construction home with an affordable, zero-percent interest mortgage.

“I learned about Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity because my grandmother was a part of the program and built a house successfully,” Melissa Mitchell said in a Habitat press release.

“Owning a home will mean that I am able to give my kids everything they need,” Melissa said. “I want to say thank you for helping my dream come true.”

Approved applicants like Mitchell must complete 10 financial and homeownership education classes, attend monthly one-on-one budgeting sessions, and dedicate 350 hours of “sweat equity” volunteer time with Habitat.

On May 18, we sent RETEX’s Andy Connor to partake in the Habitat home dedication ceremony on Moncure Ave. We spent a rainy February day installing house wrap, siding, and trim for this Habitat home and its backyard shed. To see the family who will get to make this house into a home is something surreal. It makes our volunteer days even more worth it!

We love our monthly volunteer days, especially with our Habitat friends, as we give back to our local community. Meanwhile, if you’re a homeowner in need of help with your home’s exteriors, give us a call – 804-258-6300 – to schedule an appointment today.
