The Most-Common Problem With Gutters

Katelyn Lewis • Jun 15, 2022

What is the most-common problem with gutters homeowners face? They get clogged.

A home’s gutters divert water away from the roofline and the home itself, protecting the roof, the walls, the foundation, and the surrounding landscape. But when it storms, the water flowing down your roof picks up everything in its path – including leaves, branches, and pollen – and flows them into these unsung heroes, clogging your gutters.

If your gutters are clogged, like these old gutters removed from a house in North Chesterfield, VA, they can’t drain properly. You may notice debris piling on top of your gutters or water overflowing them. Built-up debris can hurt your gutters’ ability to guide water away from your home, potentially causing the gutters to sag, mold to grow, roofs to leak, basements to flood, or damage to your interiors or exterior walls.

To prevent clogged gutters, we recommend cleaning or hiring a professional to clean your gutters at least twice a year. Installing gutter guards may also reduce the amount of debris that builds up in your gutters, though they will still require occasional maintenance to perform well.

Flat roofs are nearly horizontal in pitch, with the slightest slope to allow water to drain, rather than sit, on top of the roof. In this case, this Richmond homeowner opted for a TPO, or single-ply roof.
