What Questions Should You Ask A Window Contractor?

Katelyn Lewis • August 14, 2025

You need new windows, but you're not sure how to prepare for meeting with window contractors for quotes.

Retex installed a new roof and new windows for this North Chesterfield VA home in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

These five questions will help you ensure you’re choosing the right professional for the job:

  • “What Experience Do You Have with Window Installations or Replacements?” Gauge the contractor's expertise, especially with the type of windows or project complexity you have in mind.

  • “Can You Provide References or Examples of Recent Projects?” Seeing their work and hearing from past clients can give you insight into the quality of their work, reliability, and customer satisfaction. Read through online reviews, too.

  • “Are You Licensed And Insured?” A licensed contractor ensures they meet local requirements, and insurance protects you from liability in case of accidents or damages.

  • “What’s Included in Your Estimate and Are There Any Potential Additional Costs?” Clarifying what's covered in the estimate (materials, labor, cleanup) and understanding potential extra costs helps prevent unexpected expenses.

  • “What is the Timeline for the Project and How Do You Handle Delays?” Knowing the estimated start and completion dates, and the contractor's approach to managing delays helps set expectations and avoid frustrations.
